The Bremer minimises water consumption further
The Bremer Institute of TAFE has reduced its water consumption by almost 80 percent in the last five years with its flagship campus at Bundamba expected to use just 7 megalitres in the 2008/2009 financial year.
A series of severe water saving measures have helped reduce the Bundamba campus' water usage from 32 megalitres in 2004/2005 to just 7.65 megalitres in 2007/2008, with further reductions currently underway.
Institute Director, Mrs Julia Thaggard, said planting drought tolerant plants, using recycled water for maintenance and improving management of plumbing systems are just some of the strategies put in place to help reduce water usage at The Bremer.
"Fourteen water tanks, with a total capacity of 32 megalitres, have been installed to capture water for ground watering and vehicle washing.
"We have also installed dual flush toilets throughout the Institute and placed flow restrictions on all taps," she said.
"As a leader in education we aspire to set a good example to the community and students about the correct way to care for our environment.
"Our facilities staff are to be congratulated for their hard work in resourcing and implementing the changes, and everybody who works and attends our campuses is to be congratulated for adhering to the changes so well," she said.
