The Bremer Institute of TAFE to offer fee-free child care diploma training in 2009

The Bremer Institute of TAFE is participating in a state-wide TAFE initiative that will provide free training for child care Diploma and Advanced Diploma students commencing January 2009.

The initiative is the result of an agreement between the Queensland Department of Education and Training and the Federal Government which removes TAFE tuition fees for the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Children's Services courses.

Institute Director Mrs Julia Thaggard said the fee removal will go a long way to helping train the 14,000 additional workers needed in the Queensland childcare industry by 2010.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for child care workers in the Ipswich area and the western corridor of Brisbane to upgrade qualifications and prospective new workers to enter the industry," she said.

"Also exciting is the flexibility with which these programs are delivered which includes face-to-face or on-the-job training, or through distance learning."

"A Diploma can lead to new career paths and is often a stepping stone to university," Mrs Thaggard said.

The Australian Government has provided $8.5 million to the program nationally to support new and existing childcare workers to gain a vocational education and training qualification in Early Childhood.
